According to the former developer, Rockstar Agent was something like James Bond and more linear than GTA

Remember the AGENT game from Rockstar? Announced in 2007. for PlayStation 3, it was declared as stealth explosion, the action of which unfolds during the Cold War. She received sporadic updates, but in the end she refused the brand, and she was removed from the developer’s website. However, thanks to the former technical director of Rockstar North, Obbe Vermeij, who worked in the company from 1999 to 2009, new details appeared.

He noted that after Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the team wanted to do something else.

Rockstar San Diego worked on the game in the style of James Bond. Former President Rockstar North Leslie Basis wanted to do something like that. We made a demo version in which we were engaged in spy affairs in San Andreas. It seems that there was a deltaplane and a car that turns into a submarine, or something like that.

The project made a sufficient impression on the studio in San Diego and New York to start working on it. However, at the same time, the development of Grand Theft Auto 4 began.

The idea was to divide the team in the north approximately in half. Half of us will work on the next Grand Theft Auto (4), and the other half over the agent.

The game was more linear than Grand Theft Auto, with locations such as the French Mediterranean city, Swiss ski resort, Cairo and large -scale space shootout with lasers. It was "Classic James Bond". The team worked on this project for more than a year, but it "It was not as good as we hoped".

It was inevitable that in the end the whole company was supposed to stand up for Grand Theft Auto 5. We tried to reduce the game in order to have time to make its main part before the inevitable call from New York comes. We cut out a whole level (it seems, Cairo) and, possibly, even the cosmic part.

In the end, Agent was recognized "Too distracting factor", And they refused him. According to PBB, another company in Rockstar took up the development, but it was never completed. Nevertheless, it is interesting to know what could be.

Rockstar Games is currently working on the next Grand Theft Auto, the first trailer of which will be shown in early December. According to Take-Two forecasts, it may enter the market until April 2025.
